Join us to discover how Oshawa Archivist Jennifer Weymark began the quest to solve a historic mystery – what is our local Black heritage?
This under-researched area in Durham Region’s history gained momentum after a request to the Archives from Trent University in 2011. Inquiry into the Port Oshawa Pioneer Cemetery revealed that a Black family was living in the Cedar Dale neighbourhood in the late 19th century and members were buried at that location. This ongoing research project has traced 5 generations of the family, from Vermont to Quebec, then East Whitby, and finally California.
Jennifer will share this family’s fascinating story, and reveal the tools and methods used by archivists to conduct family research for those interested in finding their own family’s roots.
