SUMMARY:TEA & HISTORY SPEAKER SERIES: Captain Scott's Scrapbook
DESCRIPTION:Amongst the family albums her mother had kept\, Brooklin historian and archivist Margot Dixon found something very curious—Captain Samuel F. Scott’s (1847-1905) old scrapbook. Who was this man? And why did her family have his scrapbook? As she read through the book\, full of one-of-a-kind documents\, she soon realized this was much more than a family curiosity. From the items within and Margot’s own research\, a fascinating story emerged – one of a life on the high seas in the late nineteenth century\, sailing across some of the most dangerous waters\, facing storms\, shipwrecks\, illness\, war\, mutiny\, and tragedy. Captain Scott’s Scrapbook provides an intimate account of one of Canada’s most remarkable post-confederate shipmasters. Join us to discover his fascinating adventures\, and Margot’s adventures in researching his biography. \nADMISSION: Pay What You Can \nREGISTRATION REQUIRED \n  \n

SUMMARY:TEA & HISTORY SPEAKER SERIES: Uncovering Local Black History
DESCRIPTION:ONE FAMILY’S STORY\nJoin us to discover how Oshawa Archivist Jennifer Weymark began the quest to solve a historic mystery – what is our local Black heritage? \nThis under-researched area in Durham Region’s history gained momentum after a request to the Archives from Trent University in 2011. Inquiry into the Port Oshawa Pioneer Cemetery revealed that a Black family was living in the Cedar Dale neighbourhood in the late 19th century and members were buried at that location. This ongoing research project has traced 5 generations of the family\, from Vermont to Quebec\, then East Whitby\, and finally California. \nJennifer will share this family’s fascinating story\, and reveal the tools and methods used by archivists to conduct family research for those interested in finding their own family’s roots. \nADMISSION: Pay What You Can \nREGISTRATION REQUIRED

SUMMARY:TEA & HISTORY SPEAKER SERIES: Following the Trail of the Betts Bibles
DESCRIPTION:A GENEALOGICAL JOURNEY\nBeth Adams got hooked on genealogy when her Aunt Charlotte took her and her mother to visit the Betts House\, an old stone home that her great-great-grandfather had helped to build on Westney Road in Pickering.  The house was fantastic — but the family Bible her cousin Myra got out to show them was the clincher! Inside that bible was a typewritten transcript of the family pages from an even older Bible. And there was another house at the end of the search… \nFollow along with Beth’s journey through her family’s past\, and discover their connection to Whitby and the Lynde family. \nAfter a 30-year teaching career in Toronto\, Beth Adams retired to Pembroke. She is currently on the Education Committee for the Toronto Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society. Beth started pursuing family history research in her late teens\, and has loved “chasing dead people” ever since! \nADMISSION: Pay What You Can \nREGISTRATION REQUIRED
