SUMMARY:TEA & HISTORY SPEAKER SERIES: Whitby Before Whitby
DESCRIPTION:AN INDIGENOUS HISTORY \nMost of Whitby history is told from the arrival of the first Settlers\, but who was here before them? Using maps\, charts\, images\, and storytelling\, this presentation will explore the rich Indigenous history of Whitby before Whitby. \nDavid Cook has been an active member of local Indigenous culture for over 60 years\, and brings a balance of traditional knowledge combined with scientific and historical enquiry. He will guide us through the Indigenous history of our community from the last Ice Age to the present. With cultural sensitivity\, we will understand the events that shaped the past Indigenous lives in Durham Region\, as well as those impacting today’s Indigenous peoples. \nDavid retired after a career as a C-level executive in the private\, public\, and not-for-profit sectors. He has contributed to Canadian civil society in a number of professional and volunteer roles\, with a particular interest in Indigenous programs and services.  He is the newest volunteer at the Whitby Historical Society. \nADMISSION: Pay What You Can \nREGISTRATION REQUIRED – Register ONLINE or call 905-665-3131
